From the warmth and majesty of JS Bach through the Byzantine realm of John Tavener to Helgi Ingvarsson’s lyrical Icelandic sound world, cellist Clare O’Connell presents an ethereal evening of music ancient and modern for cello.

This programme takes us on a journey from the sunshine of Bach’s 1st Suite in G major, to Iceland with Helgi Ingvarsson’s fairytale inspired “Castle in Air”, to a remote Byzantine monastery with John Tavener’s Chant and finally back to Germany for the monumental Suite in Eb major from JS Bach.

Clare O’Connell is a cellist specialising in playing chamber music. She is a founder member of CHROMA, and works with Lontano, the Harborough Collective, Marais Ensemble, Aurora and Mahogany Opera. She takes great pleasure in curating CHROMA’s series of chamber music concerts in Berkhamsted, interweaving music, poetry and storytelling, and for which she has commissioned new works from composers such as Leonardo Margutti and Luke Bedford. She has programmed and produced CHROMA’s first own label album ‘Folk Tales’ which she conceived and recorded with Chroma artists David Le Page and Ian Watson.

Latest highlights include a performance of Kodaly’s Solo cello sonata at Latitude Festival, and Chroma’s “Half Island Half Bird” Messiaen inspired project on Fair Isle.
